World Cup 2022 likely to be played during Qatar winter, official says

(WJLA) - Qatar's brutal summertime weather conditions will likely force FIFA to shift the 2022 World Cup to the winter, CNN reports.

In an unprecedented move by the world's soccer authority, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke told a French radio station that the tournament will likely be played between Nov. 15, 2022 and Jan. 15, 2023.

Summer temperatures in Qatar can soar on average to nearly 110 degrees, while the climate in the wintertime cools to averages in the high 70s to mid 80s.

Sepp Blatter, FIFA's president, told CNN that no official decision on the tournament's schedule would be made until after this year's World Cup, which will take place in Brazil this June and July.
