John Tortorella fired by New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have fired head coach John Tortorella.

The team confirmed the move in a tweet early Wednesday afternoon.

Tortorella spent five years coaching the Rangers and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Final last season. New York was knocked out of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs in five-game semifinal against the Boston Bruins.

He coached the Tampa Bay Lightning to a Stanley Cup title in 2004.
