(WJLA) - Alexander Ovechkin has begun the 2013-14 season in the same fashion he ended the last one, and his hot start has gleaned him honors from the National Hockey League.

The NHL named the Washington Capitals' captain its First Star for the league's opening week of action. During the team's first three games, Ovechkin tallied four goals and two assists to lead the league in both categories.

Three of Ovechkin's four goals have come on the power play.

Washinton is 1-2 to start the season after their 2-1 loss at Dallas on Saturday. The team returns home Tuesday to begin a four-game homestand at the Verizon Center, during which they'll host Carolina, Colorado, Edmonton and the New York Rangers.
