(WJLA) - The Atlantic Coast Conference's men's basketball tournament is returning to Washington in 2016.
For the first time since 2005, the Verizon Center will play host to the annual ACC Tournament, which determines the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Washington is getting the tournament despite the impending departure of the D.C. area's only ACC team, the Maryland Terrapins, to the Big Ten. The Terps will move conferences after the 2013-14 athletic year.
"The nation's capital serves as the perfect site for the championship tournament of such a prestigious conference," Verizon Center General Manager David Touhey said in a statement.
The 2016 tournament will be held between March 9 and March 13. The Capital Centre hosted ACC Tournaments in 1976, 1981 and 1987 as well before it was razed.
Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. Played host to the tournament last season and will do so in 2014 and 2015.
