Rising Star: Adrianne Hagood

Adrianne Hagood - Elizabeth Seton senior (ABC7)

Adrianne Hagood was born with a cleft lip and a cleft palate.

"It’s been hard trying to not let the problem weigh me down," said Hagood, a senior at Elizabeth Seton High School.

The 18 year old basketball star is tough. She has gone through six different surgeries, while dealing with bullying at school.

"My mom always tells me don’t worry about what other people say, you’re beautiful," said Hagood. "God made you the way you’re supposed to be. He doesn’t make mistakes."

"There is a way that you don’t have to be silent," said Elizabeth Seton basketball head coach Jonathan Scruggs. "You can be who you are and there are plenty of people that will love you for who you are."

Adrianne has learned to block out the weird stares and negativity, and has become a very good basketball player along the way. Next year, she will play at Sacred Heart University while majoring in psychology.

"I really like people who aren’t 'normal'," Hagood said. " I want to work with them and understand what they’re going through. Everybody has flaws, but that makes that person who they are so like what I was born with it made me the person I am today."
