March Madness comes early in Virginia
March Madness comes a couple weeks early in Virginia, as high school basketball teams face off in regional action.
George Mason High School hosts the Bull Run District playoff games on Valentine's Day. The host team will face Clarke County, and William Monroe and Madison County will tip it up before that game.
In the Cedar Run District, it took overtime for top seeded Osbourn to beat Broad Run 109-104. (More than half of Broad Run's points from the hands of Nigel Johnson with 55 points.)
Meanwhile, it also took second seeded Stonewall Jackons OT to beat Battlefield by three points.
In the district title game, a close one at that, Osbourn beat Jackson 57-53.
In the Dulles District, Briar Woods did a 'Tiger Woods' and lost their last couple of games to hand the title to Loudoun Valley. Briar Woods had the misfortune of a illness to its star players Myles Tate, and Correy Facciane.
The girls Stonewall Jackson continued their dominance in the Cedar Run District... The Raiders have won more than 70 consecutive district games..
There was drama in the Dulles District - Loudoun County was just one quarter away from a district title but Woodgrove went on a run for the ages.
They came from behind to beat Loudoun County 51-44 Friday. Then in a one game playoff on Saturday, the Wolverines came back from behind again against Loudoun County on Saturday 61-53, giving them their first regular season title in the school's history.
Girls basketball in Maryland: the area's top-seeded Riverdale Batpist girls lost only once this year, to the nation's top ranked team. They climbed all the way to the number two perch in the nation behind St. Mary's (Arizona)
But they'll probably drop a couple of spots after a road loss to St. Anthony's (NY) Saturday.
In Maryland, congrats to the State Dual Meet Wrestling titles were awarded. Winters Mill crushed Owings Mills to win the Class 2A/1A championship.
And, Urbana beat River Hill for the 4A/3A title. Both teams finished the season undefeated...
