Report: Washington Spirit may play match at new Audi Field this summer
WASHINGTON (ABC7) —
The Washington Spirit could be coming to play at Audi Field.
The Washington Post reported Friday that the Spirit, a National Women’s Soccer League team, is in discussions with D.C. United about possibly playing a match at the new stadium this summer.
The clubs are said to be in “advanced talks” about the possibility, according to the Post. The match would be played in late August.
“We’ve come to terms, but it’s up to the scheduling whether we can pull it off,” Spirit president Chris Hummer told the Post.
If the possible match at Audi Field proves to be successful, the Post reported that it could lead to more Spirit games at the new venue in the future.
Currently, the Spirit plays at Maryland SoccerPlex, in Boyds, Maryland, which seats 4,000.
The Spirit enters its sixth season in the NWSL, a 10-team league, this year.
United is the operator for Audi Field, a 20,000-seat stadium venue currently under construction in Buzzard Point in Southwest Washington. Last week, it was announced that United’s first game at the new stadium will be on July 14.
