Adam scores twice in Sabres' 5-1 win over Capitals
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Luke Adam scored twice, Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves, and Zack Kassian scored his first NHL goal in the Buffalo Sabres' 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.
Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht also scored to help the injury-riddled Sabres (13-9-1) snap a three-game winless streak despite missing nine regulars.
Enroth made his seventh straight start for injured starter Ryan Miller (concussion).
Along with Miller, the Sabres were without forwards Drew Stafford (undisclosed injury), Tyler Ennis (ankle), Cody McCormick (upper body), Brad Boyes (right leg), Patrick Kaleta (lower body), and defensemen Tyler Myers (broken wrist), Mike Weber (upper body), and Robyn Regehr (upper body).
Regehr and Stafford both missed their first game after getting hurt Friday night in a loss to Columbus.
Paul Szczechura, recalled from Rochester of the AHL before the game to replace Stafford, assisted on both of Adam's goals.
Jason Chimera scored on a penalty shot, and Tomas Vokoun made 23 saves for the sliding Capitals (12-9-1). Washington has lost four straight on the road, and is 3-7-1 over its last 11 games overall.
Adam extended Buffalo's lead to 4-1 just 1:12 into the third with his second of the game, sending a wrist shot past Vokoun from the right circle.
Hecht made it 5-1 with a breakaway goal while Buffalo was short-handed with 5:21 left in the third.
Chimera converted his penalty shot attempt 6:39 into the second to make it 2-1. He was hauled down by Buffalo defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.
Kassian pushed Buffalo's lead to 3-1 27 seconds later when his snap shot from the right circle squirted between Vokoun's pads.
Adam opened the scoring midway through the first period, snapping home a shot from the slot after Washington defenseman Dennis Wideman's clearing attempt went off of Szczechura.
Pominville made it 2-0 with 4:37 left in the first when he banged home a rebound from in tight.
