LUMBERTON, N.C. (ABC7/CNN) —
Flooding in North Carolina has gotten so bad that the National Guard was called in to perform water rescues, according to CNN.
So far, they have helped save thousands of people across the state. CNN reports that major rivers are expected to stay above flood stage for much of the week.
Hurricane Matthew has been blamed for 27 deaths nationwide, 17 of which were recorded in North Carolina, according to CNN. Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina also had fatalities.
This comes after hundreds were killed in Haiti and throughout the Caribbean last week, CNN reports.
