The latest weight-loss idea: Dukan diet

A new diet craze called the “Dukan Diet” was reportedly used by Catherine, the newest member of the British royal family, to lose weight.

The Dukan Diet involves cutting out carbohydrate foods in particular to lose weight. British tabloids report that supposedly Kate's mother, Carole Middleton, talked about going on this high-protein, low-fat, low-carb Dukan Diet -- similar to the Atkins diet – to get wedding-ready.

A typical day’s meals under the Dukan Diet would start with low-fat cottage cheese and an egg for breakfast, followed by fat-free yogurt for a snack. Lunch would be fish, with an afternoon snack of more yogurt as well as chicken and shrimp for supper.

Named after French Dr. Pierre Dukan, one of the diet's secrets is consuming several tablespoons of 100 percent pure oat bran every day to make the stomach feel full, as well as drinking six glasses of water a day.

Local dietician Nour El-Zibdeh says the diet will make you lose weight fast, but can be dangerous. Side effects could include headaches and mood swings, she said.

The Dukan Diet also calls for a 20-30 minute walk every day, and alcohol is off limits.
