South Florida flooding widespread after 18 inches of rain

(WJLA/CNN) - A massive deluge of rain has left some portions of South Florida underwater after more than a foot of rain fell over a 24 hour period.

One of those areas, Palm Beach County, saw upwards of 18 inches of rain through Friday morning. In St. Lucie County, homes and streets were flooded, forcing schools to close for the day.

Interstate 95 near Boynton Beach was closed for a period of time as well. Flood Warnings remain in effect for several spots.

WPBF reports that the heaviest rain in Palm Beach County was centered between the cities of Hypoluxo and Boynton Beach.

The National Weather Service in Miami reports that one of its gauges in Hypoluxo recorded more than 22 inches of rain.
