Storms knock down trees, cut power in Virginia, D.C.

Dark clouds are visible above Bristow.

Powerful storms blew through Northern Virginia Friday night, blowing down trees, knocking out power and triggering tornado warnings earlier in the evening. The cell pushed north through Stafford County into Prince William County and Fairfax.

Several trees have crashed into houses, Fairfax County officials said. No injuries have been reported. In Stafford County, customers at a Loews were required to stay in the store while the storm passed. Trees were knocked down here as well.

Dominion Power reported on their website that 14,757 customers in Virginia were in the dark. Pepco reported about 6,600 customers without power.

By about 8 a.m. Saturday, Pepco reported 395 customers without power. Dominion had 1,644 without power.

Earlier, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Stafford, Prince William and Fairfax counties, which expired at 7:15 p.m. A warning for Fredericksburg city was called off earlier.

Around 6:44 p.m., the Weather Service said radar images indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado seven miles southwest of Stafford moving northeast.

Above, video shot in Bristow shows dark clouds hanging over the city and winds whipping trees. The strong thunderstorm was moving rapidly up the I-95 corridor.
