(CNN) - A spate of injuries at recess has an update New York middle school taking an extraordinary step - they're banning balls.

For the most part, at least.

Students at Weber Middle School in Port Washington, N.Y. were informed earlier this week that during recess, they're no longer allowed to use footballs, hard soccer balls, baseballs and lacrosse balls.

Rough games of tag are also banned, as are cartwheels - unless a gym teacher is there to supervise.

Kathleen Maloney, the superintendent of the Port Washington Union Free School District on Long Island, says that an uptick in playground injuries led to the ball ban.

"Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious," she said. "We want to make sure our children have fun but are also protected."

Maloney says that injuries to the head, bumps, scrapes and bruises are all among the injuries they've seen more of.

In the meantime, students are still allowed to use Nerf balls on campus.
