CHILLUM, Md. (WJLA) - Detectives in Prince George's County are escalating their search for the man they believe is behind a pair of sexual assaults in a wooded area of Hyattsville.
Prince George's County Police officials released Thursday a sketch of the suspect they're seeking in connection to the Oct. 29 assaults of two women off Belcrest Road.
"To have a sketch is extremely valuable, And that's why we're out here today pounding the pavement, going door-to-door, going to shopping centers -- hoping someone in the community recognizes this person," said Officer Nikki Hubbard.
Police believe the man depicted in the artist’s rendering committed two rapes just 15 minutes and 100 yards apart on a trail between Northwestern High and these apartments in Chillum.
They reportedly took place at about 1:15 p.m. on October 29, and the victims are an adult woman and a high school-age girl.
Despite a massive police effort, the man has eluded capture, so on Thursday detectives returned to the scene of the crimes with the newly created sketch, hoping for a break. The fear is he may strike again.
"It's kinda weird knowing somebody's still running around here -- gotta keep kids safe and all," says Chillum resident Bryant.
"They need to catch him -- anything could happen," adds Hanna Caceres.
Authorities describe the suspect as a 30-year-old Hispanic man who stands between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-10. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants and a red baseball hat with black or blue trim.
