WASHINGTON (WJLA) - One after another, customers carried bags of groceries to their cars Sunday from a Fresh & Green's supermarket in Northwest, likely for the last time.
The 48th Street Northwest location is one of six that will be closing down. Employees found out just two weeks ago that the chain's Washington and Maryland locations would be shuttered.
After learning of the store's closing, though, the neighborhood stepped up in a big way to help out employees that would soon be out of work. One of them, Marcia Wolf, reached out to neighbors to encourage them to donate to the 42 Fresh & Green's employees who would soon be out of work.
"It takes a lot of donations to make a difference, but at least they'll know we cared," Wolf said.
The parent company of Fresh & Green's says the locations simply weren't profitably. Where the bottom line fell short, though, shoppers say it was the employees who make the store rich in customer loyalty.
"Even the neighbors don't want this shut down, but they've got no choice," Fresh & Green's employee Kwaku Kyeremasteng said.
Wolf, meanwhile, says she has raised about $2,500 to distribute to the soon-to-be laid off employees.
"It's hard. It's harsh. You get to know these people," she says. "We have the Giant, we have the Safeway, but they're not like these people."
The five other Fresh & Green's locations to be shuttered are located in Arnold, Brunswick, Cambridge, Baltimore and Chestertown, Md.
