WASHINGTON (WJLA) - The new year got off to a violent start in Adams Morgan.
Five people were stabbed early Tuesday morning outside a nightclub along the 18th Street corridor, authorities say, with victims and bloody clothing found in several parts of the neighborhood.
MPD officials say that four of the victims were stabbed during a fight inside the District nightclub, which is located in the 2400 block of 18th Street NW. Two of the victims were found in front of the club, while two more were found on nearby Adams Mill Road.
A fifth stabbing victim was later found on Champlain Street. Officials say that person was stabbed in the head from behind as he walked away from the club.
Investigators say it appears the assaults stemmed from a fight that took place on the second floor of the club. It's unclear what the fight was about.
For longtime residents of Adams Morgan, the fight is another sign of how things can go wrong in what has become one of the city's most popular night spots.
"If people are coming to do some fighting or stabbing, then there's no way you can stop them," Adams Morgan BID member Pat Patrick said. "I'm just thankful it wasn't guns."
A notice on the door at District indicates that it is seeking the renewal of its liquor license. The club has been closed temporarily while an investigation continues.
