A Fairfax County family is outraged after they were targeted by vandals who destroyed their holiday display which took hours to construct and cost thousands of dollars.
The vandalism occurred in the 7300 block of Wayfarer Drive in Fairfax Station.
For 18 years, Mike Lester has created a Christmas Wonderland with hundreds of Santas, a hot air balloon and 200,000 lights.
But for the first time, the display got un-welcomed visitors this past weekend who smashed decorations with baseball bats and rammed much of the display with a car. Tire tracks are still visible on the ground.
"It's just despicable," said neighbor Elizabeth McCafferty. "I don't understand why."
Home surveillance cameras the family installed a few years back, captured the vandalism at 4 a.m. Sunday. In the video, two young men are running around the yard wreaking havoc.
More than $6,000 worth of damage was caused.
Lester, who worked on the display for months with his wife, says it's not about the money.
Pieces that have been in the family for 50 years that were destroyed.
"The thing that was most distressing [...] you can't replace and were very special to me," Lester said.
