This week, GOP Strategist Jack Burkman announced that he would pursue a bill to ban gay players from the National Football League. The effort prompted widespread condemnation. Burkman's lobbying firm lost clients. And his old employer, his brother, and NFL prospect Michael Sam denounced the effort.

Burkman, a weekly political contributor to Capital Insider, said he will announce co-sponsors next week.

"Not only are we not backing down, we're doubling down, tripling down, and we will pass this legislation," Burkman said.

Democratic Strategist Richard Fowler accused Burkman of hatred and homophobic language.

"This is the most egregious thing that I've ever heard of in American history," Fowler said.
