Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee to become Democrat
The embattled governor of Rhode Island is changing his party affiliation from Independent to Democrat, POLITICO reports.
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee was elected in 2010 as an Independent, defeating Republican John Robitaille and Democrat Frank Caprio for the seat. Sources tell POLITICO will likely join the Democratic party by the 2014 election.

The former Republican U.S. senator left the GOP in 2007 and was elected as the nation's only independent governor in 2010. Chafee has been saying for months that he was thinking about the switch, noting that he shares many positions with Democrats and that joining the party will help with fundraising.
