Mitt Romney takes the GOP lead after Santorum drops

Mitt Romney was all smiles after speaking with Rick Santorum directly in the wake of Santorum's decision to suspend his campaign.

"I look forward to his work in helping assure victories for Republicans across the country in November," Romney said.

"While this Presidential race for us is over, we are not done fighting," Santorum said.

But analysts say, despite Santorum's surprising success, increasing pressure within the GOP made this announcement inevitable.

Perhaps the final straw, Santorum faced an uphill battle and the possibility of losing his home state of Pennsylvania in two weeks.

"It would have been a humiliating loss in his home state and that's the way all the trend lines were looking," said Charles Mahtesian of Politico.

As for the incumbent, President Obama remained on message, targeting the Republican Party's history of trickle-down economics, while campaigning in Boca Raton, Florida.
