D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is blaming the government shutdown for the District missing a $74 million payment to Metro last week, according to a report in The Washington Post.
A metro spokesman said the missed payment was not a "immediate issue" but added that Metro would "closely monitor" the situation. The District's inability to make the payment does mean that funds will need to be shifted and some officials expressed concern that Metro may soon need to start cutting service.
"You have to run in a safe way," D.C. Council member and Metro board member Muriel Bowser said. "Certainly nobody wants to have any cuts to hours. There is really only so much cutting back you can do to a system like ours and run safely."
