Hillary Clinton and Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman were some of the more notable names that came out recently in support of gay marriage.
A recent ABC News-Washington Post survey said that a record-high 58 percent of Americans think gay marriage should be legal. The support is up 26 percent since the 32 percent support reported in 2004, ABC News reported.
Thirty-six percent now say gay marriage should be illegal.
The greatest increase in support for gay marriage came from nonwhites, whose support was up by 33 percent from 2004—now at 61 percent.
Liberals and 18-29 year olds were the most supportive of gay marriage, at 58 percent and 57 percent, respectively, ABC News reported.
