(WJLA) - American Idol runner-up and gay-rights activist Clay Aiken is considering running for congress in his home state of North Carolina, according to a report in the Washington Blade.
Aiken, who appeared on the Fox singing competition's second season, has taken preliminary steps toward running, including speaking with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, political strategists and polling firms. A source told the Blade that Aiken was "actively considering” running and was “sounding and acting like a candidate.”
The 35-year-old Aiken would run in North Carolina's second congressional district, a seat currently held by second-term Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.). The deadline for Aiken to enter the race is Feb. 28 at noon.
Since leaving American Idol, Aiken has built a successful career as a singer and on Broadway. He's also served as a national ambassador for the United States Fund for UNICEF, traveling around the world as part of aid missions.
