Spike in violence in Iraq
On Monday, a wave of bloodshed stretched from north of Baghdad to the southern city of Basra. It targeted Sunni and Shiite communities, killing more than 100 people. The violence continued on Tuesday, as a suicide bomber struck a military checkpoint and militants opened fire on Iraqi troops.
