Harvey floodwaters claim life of Houston police officer in line of duty
The officer, Sergeant Steve Perez, had been with the Houston Police Department for more than 30 years.
Citing three HPD officials, the Chronicle said the officer had been on his way to work in downtown Houston Sunday morning when high water trapped him in his patrol car at I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road.
This account was confirmed by Houston Police.
"He was trying different routes and took a wrong turn," an unnamed, high-ranking official told the Chronicle.
According to the publication, the officer's efforts to get out of the car were unsuccessful.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said HPD officers had rescued more than 3,400 Harvey victims as of Tuesday morning.
