Pope Francis is Time Magazine's Person of the Year

Pope Francis is Time Magazine's 2013 Person of the Year, the magazine announced Wednesday morning.

"How do you practice humility from the most exalted throne on earth?" Time's{ }managing editor Nancy Gibbs wrote in the magazine's explanation of its decision. "Rarely has a new player on the world stage captured so much attention so quickly—young and old, faithful and cynical—as has Pope Francis."

Pope Francis was chosen as person of the year from a group of 10 finalists that included Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, NSA leaker Edward Snowden, Miley Cyrus and President Obama.
