LEESBURG, Va. (WJLA/AP) -- In the rural Loudoun County town of Lovettsville, Virginia, Frank McDonough recalls with fondess from his porch the neighbors who always brightened his day: 29-year-old Carl Woodland and his three-year-old son, Noah.
On Saturday night, Woodland and his son got on a Robinson R66 helicopter with 30-year-old David Jenny, Jr. of Towson, MD, 27-year-old Leanna Kelly of Savage, MD, and her father, 58-year-old Bernard Kelly of Ellicott City, MD.
The plane took off from Endicott, NY,lost radar contact, and crashed in a remote region west of Scranton, PA. There were no survivors.
Back in Lovettsville, McDonough described Carl’s parents as the pillar of their community. He knows they are grieving the loss of two beloved lives.
"I don't think I've ever seen a man with so much family around him at any given time,” he says. “It's just a terrible tragedy."
A spokeswoman for the company that owns the R66 Rotorcraft helicopter says early indications are it was caught in a thunderstorm.
