JERUSALEM (CNN) - An American student has been found dead in Israel.

According to police, a body found in a Jerusalem forest is Aaron Sofer of New Jersey, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Thursday.

The 23-year-old, who was in Israel to study at Yeshiva, disappeared last Friday while hiking with a friend.

Sofer's father, Moshe Zvi Sofer, joined police and hundreds of volunteers who searched the forest where he was last seen.

Investigators were working to determine his cause of death.

Moshe Zvi Sofer traveled to Israel with his wife from their home in Lakewood, New Jersey, and the couple offered a 100,000 shekel (about $28,000) reward for whoever found their son, Sofer's father said in a video posted online.
