An elderly male gray seal, Gunnar, died at the National Zoo on June 22. He was 38-years-old.

Born in Iceland in November 1973, Gunnar arrived at the zoo in 1979 from the Naval Oceans Systems Center in San Diego.

Gunnar is the father of two pups, Kara and Kjia, who were born in 1983 and 1990, at the National Zoo. They currently live at Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey but will return to the National Zoo.

Gray seals typically live between 25 and 30 years.
