Corey Lewandowski responds to child with Down syndrome separated from mom: 'Womp, womp'
WASHINGTON (Circa) – President Trump's former campaign manager is facing scrutiny after his conduct during a cable news debate about the Trump administration's separation policy.
Corey Lewandowski appeared on Fox News alongside former senior DNC adviser Zac Petkanas and argued that people who cross the border illegally should expect to face the consequences given to them by the United States. Petkanas weighed in with his own opinion that separating children from parents was not an effective way to deal with illegal immigration.
The former Democratic political operative used the example of a 10-year-old with Down syndrome who was separated from her mother at the border. Petkanas was referring to a child's situation described on Tuesday by Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray as he told the Wall Street Journal about his country's stance against the new U.S. policy.
Videgaray called the situation a "particularly painful case." He says a mother and her daughter were at the border and were separated. The young girl being taken to a shelter in McAllen, Texas, according to the Washington Post. The girl is at the shelter with her twin brother despite the fact that her father, a legal U.S. resident, lives an hour away from where her mother was caught.
The foreign minister urged the United States to release the girl to her father but authorities tell the Washington Post that they are "still evaluating the father."
As Petkanas recounted this story during the debate, Lewandowski responded by saying, "womp, womp." Petkanas repeatedly scolded Lewandowski saying, "How dare you, sir?"
"We are a country with borders, we are a country of laws. When you choose to cross this country illegally, your parents can understand this. They understand very clearly," Lewandowski said. "When you cross the border illegally, when you commit a crime, you are taken away from your family and that's how this country works."
Both pundits talked over each other as the debate increased with intensity.
"She has down syndrome and she was taken from her mother," Petkanas said.
Lewandowski quickly became a trending topic on Twitter last Tuesday night.
Actress Anna Kendrick wrote, "Corey Lewandowski, you are a piece of s**t. NBC host Megyn Kelly said, "There is no low to which this coward Corey Lewandowski won’t sink. This man should not be afforded a national platform to spew his hate."
