Clashes close U.S. Embassy in Cairo

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt has closed because of clashes between protesters and police, officials announced on its own website Thursday.

The clashes, which are taking place in the area of the Corniche checkpoint on Lazoughly Street, are blocking access to and from the Embassy, officials say.

No departues or arrivals from the Embassy are being allowed, and U.S. citizens are urged to avoid the Garden City area at this time.

"As a matter of general practice, U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Egypt are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly."
