A new ad campaign aimed at British youth is causing critics to claim the shock value of one public service announcement goes too far, with many others saying the "shocking" ad is necessary to open eyes.
In the ad, as part of the "This Is Abuse" campaign, a young man is seen forcing himself on a young girl in a bedroom. As she tries to resist, the teenage boy continues to advance on her.
The hook comes near the end, when a carbon copy of the boy is seen screaming at "himself" to stop. Viewers are then prompted to ask themselves, "If you could see yourself, would you see rape?"
The Huffington Post reports that the ads are aimed to British teenagers aged 13-18 years old. The PSAs typically run during shows geared toward that age range.
A British government official told The Mirror that the campaign is meant to debunk attitudes that can lead to the acceptance of rape in relationships.
"Bringing the issue out in the open will help teenagers feel confident about challenging abuse when they see it and ultimately protect potential victims," Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone told The Mirror.
