FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WJLA) - A fire ripped through a Spotslyvania County home Sunday, destroying the structure and killing a 14-year-old boy inside.
The blaze broke out early Sunday morning and firefighters arrived just after 4 a.m. to the home on Lee Hill School Drive, just south of Fredericksburg. The first firefighters on the scene said they saw flames and smoke pouring from every window. Five family members, the victim's father, mother, grandmother, teenage sister and younger brother, all managed to escape. Xavier Montague, who had autism, did not make it out.
"He had the light in his eye of a young teenager," Montague's great aunt Bebe Jones said. "Loved his family and we loved him."
Jones, whose home is next door to the now-burned building, said Montague's father smashed a window in an attempt to enter the burning building and save his son, but it was too late.
"We have to move forward, praise our little guy Xavier and we know that he is in God's hands," Jones said. "We're going to hang in there until that day when we will see him again and we will."
