Women robbed in Northwest D.C. hot tub
Police in D.C. are investigating whether two Northwest robberies are connected, including one in which the victims were sitting in a hot tub at the time of the crime.
Before this week's hot tub robbery, Kayley Whalen found herself face-to-face with a gun.
"I looked up, and they had a machine gun pointed at me," Whalen recalled.
The 27-year-old was standing on a porch on Somerset Place NW across from Coolidge High School last Thursday around 10 p.m.when she says the unbelievable happened.
Whalen added, "It had a banana clip. It was a definitely a machine gun about this long, and it was all black."
With the gun in her face, the gunman demanded her phone and purse.
"He was wearing a face mask so everything but his eyes were covered, and he said, 'Why are looking at me?' and shook the gun at me," Whalen continued.
Police are investigating whether that masked robber was involved in another crime - robbing two women as they sat in a hot tub.
Sehaline Denile Scaggs and Jana Jones were in the hot tub at a home at 6300 5th Street NW around 8 p.m. Tuesday when the masked man approached and said, "Give me your money or I'll shoot you."
"Right now, my heart is pounding out of my chest from thinking about it," Scaggs said.
The police report says the gunman next ordered the women out of the hot tub and into the home where he told one of the victims, "Give me the money, or I'll [expletive] shoot you and the dog..."
Scaggs ran upstairs, and the gunman asked if she was calling the police.
He stole an iPod, cellphone and cash before escaping.
Like Whalen, the women described the gun the suspect displayed as a large, automatic weapon.
