A 25-year-old woman was reportedly texting while driving when she crashed her car into a tree Tuesday and drove into a lake in Waldorf.

The crash happened on St. Charles Parkway near St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf Tuesday afternoon, Charles County Sheriff's officials say.

Officials believe the driver, a Temple Hills resident, told responding officers that she was on her cell phone when her Hyundai ran off the road, hit a tree and drove 60 feet into nearby Wakefield Lake.

Authorities say the woman was able to get herself out of the car, which was submerged in about 5 feet of water. She was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

A woman who claims to be the driver of the vehicle disputes what authorities say. She told ABC7 via Twitter that she fell asleep while driving.
