MITCHELLVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - A violent, seemingly random attack on a jogger shattered the usual morning calm in a Mitchellville, Md. neighborhood around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Prince George's County Police are on the lookout for a man who approached a woman jogging along Golf Course Road.
According to Erika Newbie, a nearby resident who talked to the victim, when she turned around at a dead end, an African-American man wearing all black with a backpack was calmly standing yards away from her. He approached her and hit her over the head repeatedly with a wooden stick.
"It's very unusual for this neighborhood," Newbie told ABC 7 News. "We might have some petty crime here and there from teenagers, but for somebody to be physically attacked is very nerve-wracking."
The victim blew a whistle until a neighbor ran out, scaring the man off into nearby woods, leaving his victim bloody, badly beaten and confused.
"Is this a targeted thing? What was he trying to do?" Newbie wonders. "What was the point of the assault, because she didn't have anything on her. It wasn't like it was a robbery."
Newbie said some neighbors believe he may be a homeless man often seen in the neighborhood, a person with mental issues, or something worried residents would rather not think about.
"We don't know. There's a lot of theories going on in the community," she said. "So it makes us a little nervous."
Police described the attacker as a black man, about 25 years old, roughly 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He had on a black hat, black hoodie, black shirt and black running pants with a white stripe, and was carrying a black backpack.
Detectives had not determined a motive for the attack, which is the only one that's been reported in that area.
