Wheaton Costco opens for business

A much contested Costco is open for business in Wheaton, but that doesn't mean the controversy is over.

The 148,000 square-foot store opened Wednesday morning at the Westfield Wheaton Mall. Now customers and residents are worried how the popular warehouse store will affect traffic.

The store is expected to draw an additional 4,000 to 5,000 customers to the mall daily.

The mall declined to comment Tuesday on what it's doing to address the traffic issue.

Residents had previously objected to a plan to build to mega gas station with 16 pumps next to the Costco. They had complained that the gas station would increase area traffic and cause health risks.

The gas station was placed on hold.

A ribbon-cutting for the Costco was held at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
