Another kidnapping and robbery has occurred in Wheaton, making it the third in less than a week, and detectives believe the same man is behind the crimes.
All three attacks happened in the parking lot of the Westfield Shoppingtown mall in Wheaton.
"It's a serious concern, you know, with the holidays coming, people have to be extra careful out there, especially at night," one older man said.
At 1:50 p.m. Sunday, a 77-year-old man was entering a car in the parking lot of Westfield Wheaton Shopping Mall at 11160 Veirs Mill Road, Montgomery County Police say.
The man was approached by another man armed with a box cutter who ordered the man to get in the vehicle.
Police believe the attacker drove the man to various locations, possibly attempting to withdraw money from the man's bank account.
The attacker eventually drove to the 3500 block of East-West Highway in Hyattsville where he fled on foot.
Passersby noticed the man sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle and called police. The man had been cut with the box cutter and had injuries to his face and head.
He was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries at an area hospital.
The attacker in all three is described as an African American man with a medium complexion, between the ages of 35 and 45 years old, 5-foot-11 to 6 feet tall, and about 175 to 180 pounds.
Police say the suspect's blood was left in one of the cars from a cut from his own weapon. The bloodstains may help track him down.
