Water main break floods homes in Kensington

Crews have repaired a water main break in{ }a Montgomery County neighborhood that left nearly a dozen homes without water.

Crews patched and restored all water to homes in the Kensington neighborhood. The water that sprang from the break soiled carpets, destroyed belongings and spoiled moods in the 4400 block of Glenridge Street Tuesday evening.

Residents say the pipe ruptured early in the evening, sending water down the street and into dozens of home, including Tom Mitchell's home.

"There was water gushing," Mitchell said.

As a safety precaution, the power was shut off to at least nine home.

The cause of the break remains undetermined, but the six inch pipe was old. In fact, about a quarter of WSSC's 5,600 miles of water mains are 50-years-old or older, according to a spokesperson.
