      Washington Monument elevator rescue: Elevator working at Washington Monument

      UPDATE 10 a.m.:{}The elevator at the Washington Monument{}is back in service, according to the National Park Service.

      D.C. Fire reports{}that{}event preparations will take place on and around the National Mall as scheduled.

      ORIGINAL: D.C. Firefighters rescued 16 people Thursday evening from the elevator inside the Washington Monument.

      Fire officials say the elevator stopped about 400 feet from the ground. The Washington Monument stands 555 feet. Firefighters lowered the 16 visitors to the ground.

      Fire officials say people at the top walked down the stairs. The elevator is out of service. No one was hurt.
