Volunteers pitch in to fix up homes on National Rebuilding Day in Va., D.C.

A woman who has been in her Alexandria home for decades got some help sprucing things up today. And she wasn't the only one.

Recent days have not been bright at the home of Margaret Grimes, 82, an Alexandria resident.

“I was 16 years old when I moved in here,” Grimes says.

But today on National Rebuilding Day, teams of volunteers showed up at her home and the homes of other longtime area residents who need help. They spent all day fixing, painting and replacing things.

“It’s nice to make sure everybody else has the same opportunities,” says Art Leigh, a volunteer with Rebuilding Together Alexandria.

“I would not be able to do all of this by myself,” Grimes says. “I just want to stay out here and look back at my house. This has made me feel so much better.”

In Southeast D.C., a different group with the same mission worked on the home where Peggy Allen, 79, has lived for 51 years.

“I felt like giving up, until I heard about Rebuilding Together,” Allen says. “They’re just like angels to me because angels come along to help.”
