The Dulles Greenway, the privately-owned toll highway that connects Leesburg to Washington Dulles International Airport and the Dulles Toll Road, may soon be purchased by the state of Virginia, WTOP reports.

According to WTOP's Hank Silverberg, Virginia officials are in negotiations with the company that owns the 14-mile highway to buy the road for a price that could stretch into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

WTOP says that the company that owns the Dulles Greenway recently petitioned the State Corporation Commission to raise tolls on the highway, which can reach nearly $6 per trip at some peak times.

According to the Greenway's website, the road serves as Virginia's 6th largest property taxpayer. It is not affiliated with the Dulles Toll Road which it connects to near the airport, which was built on land owned by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
