For the family of Victoria Kong, heartbreak has replaced the hope she would be found alive. The 83-year-old's body was discovered south of Gravelly Point Monday.
"This is devastating, not the way we planned to spend Mother's Day...we wanted grandma to come home and celebrate with us," said Kong's granddaughter, Kalisse Anderson.
Kong, a Gaithersburg resident, arrived at Reagan National Airport at about 4 p.m. Friday after flying from Barbados. She was visiting her son in Barbados. Her family says she was supposed to be escorted off by wheelchair, but airport officials say she never showed up.
American Airlines released a statement saying onboard assistance was not requested, and the wheelchair waiting for Kong was not claimed after deplaning. The airline adds they are assisting authorities with their investigation.
Police spotted Kong on airport surveillance video twice. She was first seen in a taxi line at the arrivals curb and then walking away from the airport heading northbound on the bike trail along G.W. Parkway. That was around 6:30 Friday night.
Her body was found south of Gravelly Point off the George Washington Parkway about 30 feet from the bike trail in a wooded area at about 2 p.m.
Kong's granddaughters say they are still holding out hope for answers regarding their grandmother's death. They say at least now, they have closure.
Kong's family says they have not heard from the airline.
