University of Maryland Halloween sexual assault victim grabbed on Route 1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJLA) - A University of Maryland student was sexually assaulted Thursday night near the eastern edge of the College Park campus, officials say.

The attack occurred at 9:45 p.m. along the 7500 block of Baltimore Avenue, near the school's Fraternity and Sorority Row.

The street was busy with students making their way to bars and parties to celebrate Halloween when a man approached the victim, assaulted her and then fled.

According to a crime alert sent to Maryland students and staff, the suspect approached the victim and put his arm around her shoulder. The victim initially pushed him and walked away. The suspect is then said to have groped the woman before running away.

Because it was dark and the attack happened so quickly, police said the victim could not provide a description. The victim was not injured.

Police said the victim did not know her assailant. The incident is being investigated as a fourth-degree sexual assault, also referred to as unwanted sexual touching.
