(WJLA) - The University of Maryland could be the home of a new 300-room hotel in the not-so-distant future, the Washington Business Journal says.
As part of a long-delayed plan to redevelop the eastern part of the university's sprawling College Park campus, officials say that they're considering the sale of a 3-acre plot of land to make way for a hotel.
The Washington Business Journal says that the hotel would include conference and meeting space, a restaurant and bar and retail space.
Maryland's East Campus, which is located east of Route 1 near the College Park Metro station, is described by the school as "underutilized." It currently houses student housing, fraternity and sorority houses, sports fields and other facilities.
The school's most recent master plan calls for the East Campus to become the new "face of campus" that links the school to the city of College Park.
Hotels dot the landscape up and down Route 1. A Marriott Inn & Conference Center is located on the western edge of campus on the ground of the University of Maryland University College.
