WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Weeping relatives gathered just outside the crime scene tape in Southeast Washington as they waited for word from investigators. Just before 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, D.C. Police found a man and a woman dead inside an apartment here on 17th Street.
"There appears there is some trauma," said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. "I don't know if this could be a murder-suicide, or if this could be something different...We really just don't know."
The Police Chief also confirmed that arriving officers found children at the crime scene, who had apparently found the adults after arriving home from school.
So far there are few details about what happened. For hours, both plainclothes and uniformed officers pored over the scene and interviewed neighbors as they looked for clues.
A Good Samaritan tells us that he came across the mother of one of the victims - she was clearly distraught. He is a pastor who spotted her on the street in distress, begging for help:
"I heard this young lady and a friend screaming out at the 7-11," explained Pastor Holmes. "I asked her what was wrong, and she said she needed a ride -- her son had gotten killed, and it's devastating."
"She was screaming the whole time," he continued. "What are you going to say to someone who just lost a loved one? I prayed for her and her two grandkids that were left behind."
