Tractor trailer hits tree at CIA exit on GW Parkway; northbound traffic shut down
Northbound traffic on the George Washington Memorial Parkway has been shut down Thursday afternoon after a tractor trailer hit a low-hanging tree limb near the exit for the CIA, according to the U.S. Park Police.
The truck turned over partially and the driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition, police say.
GW Parkway northbound is shut down at Rt. 123 and traffic has been stacked up for miles on the parkway before reaching Rt. 123, which is technically open but also stacked up. Rt. 193 coming off 123 is also moving very slowly to the Beltway. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
Commercial vehicles are normally prohibited on the parkway, but some permitted vehicles such as US Mail trucks are allowed, according to the Park Police.
ABC7's Stephen Tschida talked with witnesses who say the truck is a US Mail truck.
