A D.C. Councilman has formed a task force to study traffic cameras to make sure cameras help with safety and aren’t just about collecting fines.

The councilman, Tommy Wells, is also inviting D.C. councilmember Mary Cheh to co-chair the task force. He said it will focus on examining fines, automated enforcement plans and crash data.

The task force will also make recommendations. Those recommendations could include reducing fines.

"The goal is to make sure the automated enforcement program is about safety, not just revenue," stated Wells.

Wells will ultimately propose legislation based off the task force’s work.

"Some fines have increased by 250 and 500 percent over the past four years. The goal of assuring safety has been eclipsed by the government's dependence upon the revenue generated by high fines,” Wells said in a statement. “With the use of cameras, assuring stricter enforcement of our traffic laws, the need for high fines should be revisited."
