D.C. school board member Trayon White is mourning the loss of a man who he said was his best friend: 24-year-old Timothy Dawkins was shot in the back in in the 4200 block of 4th Street in Southeast D.C. on Wednesday.

He was shot near the apartment he shares with his sister.

"They don't care about their lives, they're taking other people's lives,” White says.

White said Dawkins was excited about the March on Washington. They took a picture with Congressman John Lewis, were together at the pre-march rally Tuesday night at Union Temple Church where Al Sharpton spoke and afterward taking a group picture.

But less than 24 hours later, Dawkins would be dead.

Dawkins’ father, who lives a block away heard the shots and came running.

"When I went down there, my son was on his face dead, no more than 50 feet from where he lived at and nobody saw a [anything]," Douglas Dawkins says.

Trayon White says Dawkins was a budding political activist and planned to seek office with Ward 8 democrats.

"If we don’t have a plan for these young black men and ladies that are lost, we'll be here again talking about somebody else and I just pray to God that one day it won't be me,” White says.

A reward of up to $25,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. You can call police at 202-727-9099.
