Thankgsiving turkey giveaway in D.C.'s Ward 7

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Four hundred frozen turkeys were given away to people in D.C.'s Ward 7 Monday. It's thanks to a giveaway at the Deanwood Recreation Center in Northeast.

This year's need was greater because of cuts in federal food assistance programs. Cuts in the Supplimental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP{} means cuts of $29 a month for a family of three.

What's different about this program is that it includes not only turkeys, but carrots, celery, and other veggies, for a healthy meal.

For some, this giveaway is the difference between a real nutritious meal, or maybe nothing at all.

"It's difficult for people to choose between food and medicine," said{}Sharita Slayton, D.C. Promise Neighborhood Initiative. "And do they actually feed the children or themselves?"
